The Centenary Welcome Ceremony event was the curtain raiser to the Air Force’s Centenary week activities and was conducted on Monday 29 March 2021.
In the lead up to the event, soil was collected from the Traditional Owners at RAAF bases around Australia and shells from the Torres Strait Islands and placed in the For Our Country - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander memorial at the Australian War Memorial, as part of the Centenary of Air Force commemorations.
The soil placement was performed by Uncle Harry, Indigenous Elder for Air Force, supported by Indigenous Liaison Officers from the respective bases and narrated by WGCDR Peter Overton. The event was conducted with significant input by the indigenous community to ensure all aspects of this event were culturally appropriate for the occasion.
